19th Century Weapon in Bowhead Whale

Bomb lance fragment, dated 1879, found in 49-foot male bowhead whale captured at Barrow, Alaska, in May 2007. Hunters found the older device buried beneaths its blubber. The whale died when it was shot with a similar projectile. Bowhead Whales can have a lifespan of more than a century. Scientists believe that the whale was struck by the fragment around 1890.
