Eating fish and seafood during pregnancy is better for your child, researchers concluded. Better communication and social skills: “Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish, particularly oily fish, are associated with boosting children’s future brain power and social skills.” They always believed eating fish during pregnancy could cause toxic damage.

The Food Standards Agency advise that “pregnant women should eat one or two portions of oily fish a week”. Oily fish with omega-3 fatty acids, that women should eat include salmon, mackerel, pilchards and sardines. They still warn for certain fish such as marlin, swordfish and shark or just eating too much fish like lots of tuna because of the levels of mercury.

The study is published in The Lancet: “Maternal seafood consumption in pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in childhood (ALSPAC study): an observational cohort study.” Joseph R Hibbeln, John M Davis, Colin Steer, Pauline Emmett, Imogen Rogers, Cathy Williams and Jean Golding.
