Success for Archaeologists?
June 28, 2006

It seems archaeologists found some interesting things over the past months. I notice that they do not get that much attention.
A so called “Tropical Stonehenge” was found in Brazil (GOVERNO DE AMAPA, Gilmar Nascimento). It could be a centuries-old astronomical observatory. On the shortest day of the year the shadow of one of the blocks disappears when the sun is directly above it. Brazilian archaeologists will return in August, when the rainy season ends.
Archaeologists also found some ancient tombs in Egypt. The sarcophagi, which date back to the 26th dynasty (664-252 BC) were discovered about one kilometre (0.6 mile) south of the Giza pyramids.
In the mean time there is a search for India’s ancient city Muziris on India’s south-west coast. The Indian harbour was exceptionally important for trade with the Roman Empire. We will see what this brings.
